Who is Up?
October = 2020 (8th grade parents)
November = 2016 (12th grade)
December = 2017 (11th grade)
There are changes now in place for car line volunteering in the mornings.
Taking a lead from other schools that have successfully improved safety on their car lines by adding more parent volunteers, LACES is activating a GRADE for a MONTH in car line volunteering.
Parents will be asked to volunteer for a couple of days in their dedicated month based on their child(ren)’s grade.
We are launching a Grade for Month this month (October) for the class of 2020, with 8thgrade parent volunteers.
Questions:
“I don’t use the car line, I drop my kid off on Hi Point or Stearns and he/she walks in. Do I have to volunteer?”
Yes, we do need you to volunteer. Simply said, you would not be able to drop your kid off on any of the side streets if it were not for car line on 18th. If car line disappeared, it would be cluster mess on every other street and it would be a nightmare for you.
“I carpool. Does that count?”
Yes, even if you car pool, we still need you to volunteer a couple of days in your month. Your dedicated morning carpool driver should volunteer for their month. And we ask that you plan a couple of days of driving in and volunteering as well. We hear from parents at other schools who normally don’t drop off in carpool that they appreciate the extra rare morning time with their child in the car. And remember it is only a couple of days. That’s it for the year and then you get to go back to your regular carpool routine.
“My kid takes the bus”
Some of you live 15 or 20 miles from LACES and that is a hurdle. But for those of you who live 5-10 miles from LACES and your kid takes the bus we are asking if you will please adjust your schedule so that you can drive in early and volunteer. Again it is only a couple days a year per kid.
“What about my spouse?
Sure if you can’t do the volunteering then send your spouse.
“I’ve never done it before, how will I know what to do?
Not a problem. There is usually Christina Or (2021) Liz Williams (2020) and Susan Yamasaki (2020) who are out there to help you. Also when you sign up on Sign UP Genius it lays out what you need to know. It is all VERY simple.
“Okay, what is the time commitment?
7:30am – 8:05am
Last couple of thoughts:
Each grade needs to have a strong community. As our child ages at LACES we may not be micro managing their lives as we did when they were younger but we do need to be able to reach out to other parents when we have a question that only another parent can answer. Especially if that parent has older kids and they have 'been there done that'. If you have not really met other parents from your grade this is a wondeful opportunity to connect. And remember, when our kids get to be seniors there will be many activities that are reliant on parent support, we don't want the first time you to meet one another to be then! Use car line as an opportunity to meet one another now and strengthen your community at the same time.
Finally, by stepping up and moving your schedule around and yes, it will be a pain in the butt for some of you, you are showing your child that volunteering is important in your world and from that, they will learn the importance of volunteering which is not always convenient. That’s what we do to help community and that is a value they can take with them for the rest of their long lives.
Thank you for to 2020 for launching October Car Line!
